Ascoy

First advertised in July of 1946, the ASCOY (or ASCO) was a rather stylish 1.5hp, single cylinder, water-cooled outboard motor promoted by the Marine Division of the Aeronautical Supply Company (ASCOY), 210 Victoria Street, Melbourne.

Featuring a nicely shrouded engine with inbuilt fuel tank and forward controls, its not unreasonable to imagine that design inspiration for the ASCOY may have come from the American Elto and Evinrude outboard motors of the 1930’s.

Although the ASCOY was advertised by distributors in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, there are no known advertisements for new ASCOY outboard motors beyond September 1949. This may suggest the ASCOY outboard brand was short lived, however the reason/s for that remain unclear.

None the less, ASCOY remains one of Australia’s earliest commercially produced outboard motors, and is therefore a worthy addition to any Australian Vintage Outboard Collection.
